Autogas - Technical Definition
- Liquefied Petroleum Gas is usually branded as Autogas or LPG when used as a fuel in vehicles. It is the same as commercial propane, available in red bottles for heating etc.
- In order to maintain LPG as a liquid at natural temperature, it has to be stored under pressure. Specially made totally sealed strong steel LPG tanks are use to store it in vehicles.
- Autogas will offer a performance comparable to petrol, in top-end speed, acceleration, engine handling and refill times. Using it as an automotive fuel to replace petrol will result in a comparable drop in MPG, but with the price of autogas being less than half the cost of petrol will more than compensated for the drop, resulting in half cost motoring.
- Normally, when a vehicle is converted to LPG, the petrol system remains intact so that it can be used on either fuel. However the increasing number of refueling sites now a days enabling a continuous availability of Autogas in most areas in the UK.
